My First Pilates
by Liz Jones
The word "Pilates" has been in my vocabulary for
about two years. For most of that time, here's what I thought it
meant:
An exercise done with intricate machines that help stretch and tone your body, similar to isometrics or some type of muscle isolation exercise.
It sounded like an assisted workout -- too easy, I thought. Maybe, when I'm 65 and can't lift my legs without a little help. Then I overheard a couple co-workers complaining about their strenuous Pilates workouts, and I thought it might finally be time to take a closer look at this fitness craze.
I wanted to get a balanced perspective on the whole thing, so I decided to drag along my boyfriend Anthony since he'd never even heard of Pilates, or "pilots," as he likes to say.

Pilates: Take 1
Our Pilates trainer, Juel Bedford, tailored a beginner's
workout for us that started with a series of exercises on mats and
machines. Take a look at the video highlights below.
1. Juel helps Liz with her breathing
Ignore the neck convulsions as I attempt my first set of The Hundreds.
2. A modified Roll-up
The trick here is keeping your spine connected to the floor. How'd I do?
3. Rolling Like a Ball
Yep, it's as fun as it sounds.

4. Juel demonstrates the
power of the abs. Well, her abs anyway.
5. The workout moves off the mats and onto the machines.
6. The wrap-up: How do Liz and Anthony describe their first Pilates experience?
